The Shenandoah Valley plays a vital role in the regional economy and cultural identity, historically known as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy” for its fertile soils and agricultural productivity. Today, it remains Virginia’s leading agricultural region, with Rockingham and Augusta counties consistently ranking highest in the state for agricultural output. The area’s economy is driven primarily by poultry and egg production, dairy farming, and cattle and calf operations. The Valley’s rich soils also support the cultivation of a wide range of crops, including soybeans, corn, hay, and various fruits. Additionally, agritourism continues to expand, strengthening the industry while fostering community engagement with the region’s agricultural heritage.
